Brushing starts at the back because it’s a large, flat area that’s easiest to begin detangling and evaluating. Starting here lets you loosen the coat in a broad, efficient pass and establish a rhythm before moving to more sensitive or tricky spots. By working from the back, you can identify mats and tangles early and set the coat up in manageable sections, which makes subsequent brushing of the legs, chest, skirt, and head smoother. The head, ears, and tail are more delicate and prone to causing discomfort if tackled first without a prepared, detangled base, so beginning with the back minimizes stress and reduces the chance of pulling or creating more tangles later.
